Interpreter Mediated Deaf Education

Project information

The IDE project (Interpreter Mediated Deaf Education with Signed and Spoken Languages in Primary Schools) examines successes and barriers about pupils’ experiences of inclusion in interpreter mediated primary school classrooms with signed and spoken languages. With researchers from German, Irish and Norwegian universities, two schools for deaf students and the European Union of the Deaf (EUD), we aim to create evidence informed teaching and learning materials. These materials will support teachers, interpreters and all students (both Deaf and hearing) in fostering more inclusive educational experiences.

National project advisory councils have been established in Germany, Norway and Ireland and involve stakeholders representing teachers, students (or former pupils), parents, interpreters, Deaf-led organisations, and policy makers.

The IDE team will conduct qualitative focus group interviews with teachers, pupils and interpreters in primary schools to collate aspects of their experience. This will inform the development of innovative materials, which will be made available as an Open Educational Resource (OER). We take a Universal Design approach to creating our resources and will have some content available in Norwegian, German, English, and Irish written languages as well as in Norwegian Sign Language, German Sign Language, Irish Sign Language and International Sign. The OER will be disseminated for use in teacher and interpreter training, mainstream classrooms, and by school authorities.

IDE is an Erasmus+ Cooperation Partnership co-funded by the European Union from December 2024 – November 2027.
